We have all heard these terms before, and there are hundreds more just like them. But why do we use them to describe people that we dislike...and sometimes even the people we DO like? Are we such an uneducated society that we cannot use other words to describe one another? Or is it that we just choose the words we know hurt and will cut the deepest? And, that's exactly what they do, too. And, often, when these words are used, it only bring about retaliation and violence, all in the name of defending one's self. They are, after all, bullying terms and derogatory terms used to describe a person's sexual orientation, appearance, disability, race or religion. But, I would love to think that we as a nation are so much better than that. We have been brought together by some of this world's most devastating and also some of the most beautiful occasions of this world. So, why is it that we can share in the laughter and tears on holidays or disasters, but in our next breath call that same person we were just sharing an experience with a __________(insert any of the terms from above). We were all created equal and we are in this world together. So maybe, just maybe, we should except that and stop being so hurtful towards one another. When we label one another, we are not only trying to cause the other person pain, but we are also showing our own self to be so uneducated that we can't come up with anything better than that. It's fine if we can do this as a joke amongst our family and friends. I think we are all guilty of that. But when we use it in other circumstances, we really need to stop and think about the repercussions and what we are saying about ourselves----not just the other person. Labels were meant to go on products......not people.
That's just my 2 cents and it hasn't really been brought on by any one thing or person. It's just a collective assortment of things that have been heard or witnessed that made me post this.
Thanks for taking the time to read this. I hope you all have a great week.
